Exchange 2003 – 2010 Migration Steps Overview

Please follow the below steps to migrate your Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.
 
1. Make sure all DCs are Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later, make sure all Exchange 2003 servers are Exchange 2003 SP2
 
2. Raise Forest functional level and Domain functional level to Windows 2003 mode, and change Exchange 2003 to Native Mode(no pre-Exchange servers)
 
3. Prepare AD and Domain:

   PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions

   PrepareSchema

   PrepareAD

   PrepareDomain

Prepare Active Directory and Domains

4. Install Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008, change MAX record to Exchange 2010 Hub transport server, change the IP of OWA url and  point to Exchange 2010 Client Access Sever, set http://legacy.domain.com/exchange for Exchange 2003 OWA.

 

5. Move users from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.

 

6. Move public folders if you need it.

 

7. confirm everything is working fine, and then decommission Exchange 2003 servers.

 

8. Deploy Exchange 2010 Edge transport and UM server if you need.
